Total Fat (Lipids)

Fats are an essential nutrient and are an important source of energy for the body. Fats are made up of chemical units called fatty acids and play a vital role in many biological functions.

Types:

Saturated fats: Found mainly in animal sources (such as meat and dairy) and some vegetable oils (such as coconut oil). These fats are solid at room temperature.

Unsaturated fats: Considered healthier than saturated fats, they include:

Monounsaturated fats: Found in olive oil, avocados, and nuts.

Polyunsaturated fats: Include omega-3 and omega-6 acids, and are found in fatty fish (such as salmon) and seed oils.

Trans fats: Made through the hydrogenation process, and are often found in processed and fried foods. They should be avoided as much as possible because they are linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

Health benefits:
Energy source: Fats provide about 9 calories per gram, making them a rich source of energy.

Cell health: They play a role in cell formation and containment of cell membranes.
Vitamin absorption: Helps in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
Hormone balance: Helps regulate hormones and support immune system function.

Fats can be obtained from foods such as:

Vegetable oils (such as olive oil and canola oil).
Nuts and seeds.
Fatty fish (such as salmon and sardines).
Animal products (such as meat and dairy).

Despite their benefits, fats should be consumed in moderation. Excessive consumption of fats, especially saturated and trans fats, can lead to weight gain and health problems such as heart disease. It is important to choose healthy sources of fats and include them in a balanced diet.
