Lipid (Lipids)
Lipids are one of the three essential nutrients that the body needs, along with carbohydrates and proteins. Fats are an important source of energy and perform many vital functions.
Types of fats:
Saturated fats: are usually found in animal products such as meat and dairy, and some vegetable oils such as palm oil and coconut oil. It is preferable to reduce their consumption to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Unsaturated fats: are divided into two types:
Monounsaturated fats: are found in olive oil, avocados, and nuts. They are considered beneficial for the heart.
Polyunsaturated fats: include omega-3 and omega-6 acids, and are essential for the body.
Trans fats: are considered unhealthy and are often added to processed foods to increase their shelf life. They should be avoided as much as possible.
Benefits of fats:
Energy source: Fats provide a large amount of energy (9 calories per gram).
Vitamin absorption: helps in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
Supporting cell health: They are an essential component of cell membranes.
Hormone balance: Plays a role in hormone production.
